True Grit is back, Mass Appeal and Juicebox on heavy rotation

We’re in the middle of rodeo season, it’s about time for True Grit to get active- DFW’s outlaw hardcore band has been on a bit of a hiatus recently. Last May marked their return back on stage as they played the Melanie Capo Benefit Show, alongside deepincision, Pipewrench and Distain. As we’re heading deeper into the summer with rising temperatures in the forecast, it’s about time for the gang to get back to the swing of things. August 29th at Haltom Theater Side Stage, True Grit, accompanied by Opium Den, Spit My Rage and Bailout, will be opening up for NYHC legends Sheer Terror, presented by Scorned Productions. Mass Appeal- None but One

Undoubtedly, there have been some awesome releases that has reached our ears this year. Fortunately, we‘re halfway through the year and there’s new music resting on the horizon, waiting to be released. So far, there’s been a handful of new music I have on heavy rotation on walks to the downtown square, doing laundry, enjoying the evening with etc. Let’s talk about one of my favorites so far: Mass Appeal- None But One.

Released on LDB records, None but One ep is 4 songs deep and roughly 10 mins of fiercely metallic riffs marinated in DFW influence. There’s a nice, cohesive flow presented in this ep, as if this could’ve been a longer project ( me, selfishly wanting more). Each track carried its own characteristic, with smooth transitioning from one track to the next. This project is solid and stands on its own with proper execution of modern hardcore elements. The ep consists of undeniable dance parts with a bit of a menacing tone blended in. Much like the bands in metroplex. None but One carries the distinct (North) Texas heaviness with additional groove that will keep you feet moving. Favorite track: Arms Reach because you can’t deny the solo, and the breakdown in the end is the perfect way to conclude.

Juicebox- AINT SHIT SWEET

For as long as I live, there will always a deep admiration and respect for bands that continue to carry the the sound of hardcore punk with fast delivery and straight forward, confrontational spirit. There’s an certain attitude that comes with it that can’t be ignored. It’s distinguishable and more importantly, raw. That is the primary reason why I favor Juicebox and their latest ep, AINT SHIT SWEET.

Clearly stated, aint shit sweet about this ep. 7 songs with roughly 10 min runtime, the ep starts off giving you the business. The amount of energy and vigor displayed in the project makes it fun to listen to. What I love the most is it possesses a high level of spunkiness, giving it a tasteful characteristic. Exceptionally youthful record that’s a bit rough on the edges, as it should be. The mandatory side to side and two parts are executed flawlessly in suitable fashion. Let’s not forget to admire the punchy bass tone that helps bring the overall sound together. Favorite track: Dead Beat
