For DFW photographer Cameron Roach, being present during a peaceful protest that escalated to a riot was truly a shocking experience. “I’ve never experienced something like that; being that close to armored vehicles and tear gas was a crazy experience,” Cameron expresses as he describes the late afternoon chaos. Around 4:45 pm late Saturday afternoon, Cameron , along with his father were located on the corner of s Ervay and Young St. According to Cameron, as soon as they heard the gas canisters going off, they relocated to Canton and Browder St to check out where the noise was coming from. As they progressed, they were greeted with tear gas as one of the canisters landed near Cameron, “it’s was pretty loud”, he describes. Shortly after, the excruciating sounds of loud sirens filled the atmosphere as an attempt by the police to clear the crowds. Cameron also describes the sounds of the sirens as “ear piercing”.

Cameron was also a witness of policemen laughing as they were “pump faking” tear gas into the crowd, arresting protesters for no particular reason and yelling at people going the opposite direction, strapped with heavy artillery. In his words, Cameron was thankful that at the time he was in attendance, no physical altercations ensured.
