Splurge releases Glen Baby 2, available on all platforms

It was a typical hot Texas evening in June of 2018. I was cruising down I-35 with a close friend and recording artist Tree aka Rozay. Our destination was the first ever Gwapmania at a Franklin’s Tattoos in East Dallas, hosted by Daily Ooze and Dallas’ finest Gwap Gang. A day prior, I was on Twitter scrolling down my time line and I discovered a snippet of a video titled “Crazy”. What caught my attention was the deep baritone voice effortlessly spitting bars behind the beat. Intrigued and after a minute of searching, I figured out who the artist was: Splurge from East Arlington. From there I discovered two songs of his via YouTube: Beat by Jeff and Backwoods. I was impressed by how catchy the songs were: the beats on each song contained drill music inspired piano keys, no melody whatsoever and heavy usage of 808’s. “Stopped at Qt to get some woods/ jumped in the coupe feeling good/ finna pull up in the hood/ never been hoe’d , get that understood”, those bars stuck out to me, in a couple of ways it was relatable. About half way to our destination, we pulled in to the nearest Qt to fill the tank up and purchase a pack of Swishers. As I walked in, I noticed a group of young black men with a familiar voice that rang a bell but I dismissed it, I was in a hurry to get to the event. After walking out the glass doors to reach the pump, I informed Tree about the group and made the comment, “ It would be funny if one of the guys in the group was Splurge”. In the very moment, the group made their exit out of the QT. Curiosity guided my feet towards the group, after pumping gas, with a question in mind. I’m sure I was looking pretty odd as I approached them with a white polo hat and the brightest neon pink and baby blue tye dye shirt I ever owned. Before I could think, my mouth blurted out “Hey, do y’all rap?” One of the members of the group pointed towards a gas pump 20 feet behind me to my left and replied “Na but he does.” I turned my head and matched that same familiar voice that echoed into the night sky with baby dreads and a black t shirt: it was Splurge. I introduced myself to him as Christopher Thomas the photographer and told him I was a huge fan of his music. At the moment in time, I was unapologetically a fan boy for sure. After a brief exchange of words, we parted our separate ways. It may have been just another fan moment to him but to me it was a pretty dope interaction with upcoming artist that I knew was going to blow.
A lot can happen in a year and some months. Since then, Splurge has released a healthy catalog of bangers with notable producers Six7 and Beat by Jeff, performed overseas with Lil Pump, relentless traveling, performing at Rolling Loud, interviews and much more. In between that time, I wrote the write up for the tape he released late last year “Go”.
Early October, the young Arlington rapper released his full length album GlenBaby 2. Highly anticipated, the release of his tape ran into some trouble as streaming platforms failed to release the project on time. Nevertheless, Glen Baby 2 still filled the airwaves early on via AudioMack and Tidal I believe. His fans responded well to the project as he maintain his “caption rap” style and distinctive flow. The beat selection hits harder than ever as he maintains his sound with the help of Six7 and Beat by Jeff, along with producer Yung Glizzy. What I admire about Splurge is the amount of confidence he portrays in his project, it seems as if no other rapper can come close to him, like he is truly in a class of his own. Not many rappers move the way he moves and accomplished as much as he did in such a short period of time. My list of favorite tracks on this project include “Karreche”, “Free Melly Freestyle “ and “Posin”. The song “No Mo” was a track I admired, it possessed a tad bit of horrorcore in the lyricism. “ R U Ok Annie” definitely caught my attention with the Family Guy sample, I found it to be creative and hilarious. I was compelled to listen to “RoboCop”, the movie is as dope as the song itself. Every since the project was released, I found myself getting the most of out of my workout when I have GlenBaby 2 blaring through my headphones.
