Stand your Ground, Shattered Youth and Flyweight from OKHC

This past weekend- Oklahoma’s Backroom Productions and Mass Movement presented their 4th annual OKHC Showcase and Merch Swap at the OKC Farmers Market. This event is self explanatory, fulfilling its purpose of showcasing some of Oklahoma’s finest while bringing the community together in the name of the Terry Williams Memorial Scholarship. Although I didn’t attend, judging from photos I’ve seen online, the showcase reached another successful year. Prior to the showcase, there have been a handful of bands I’ve had my ear on for a short while, including Stand your Ground, Shattered Youth and Flyweight.
Stand Your Ground- This group of young guns came out swinging with their first demo earlier this year and seemingly hit the ground running. Initially, I assumed they were a North Texas band due to the number of times they played in Dallas. Nonetheless, SYG carry this primal, underdog aura, similar to a juvenile wolf pack, fresh into the unknown world, ready to show their environment who they are. From as far as I seen, their live sets exude the same unfiltered attitude, as if they have something to prove.
Earlier this year, SYG released a 2 song demo available on Spotify and Apple. An introduction isn’t necessary. The demo itself is a direct reflection to the rabid energy displayed in sound and performance alike. Their brand of metallic hardcore is more than enough to solidify their spot in this current generation. The heaviness in sound is hostile & volatile, leaving no room to play it safe. From this point, I only imagine an upward trajectory for these young bucks as they continue to play show their increasing amount of fans what they’re about
Shattered Youth- It’s safe to say I got hip to Shattered Youth late 2025. Prior to and since my discovery, the Oklahoma quintet has been moving and grooving here & there. They have been back and forth to DFW a few times, it’s apparent they aren’t strangers by any means. As time moves forward, I’ve noticed Shattered Youth gaining an increasing number of fans in a short period of time, rightfully so in my opinion. I admire two things about this band: the direction they’re heading and their homage to Minority Unit
The first demo release was in February 2025. Shortly after, the latest release containing a righteous Shattered Youth cover dropped. Needless to say, they do not shy away from delivering their contemporary version of the genre’s traditional sound by maintaining its backbone. Equipped with guttural vocal delivery, active dance parts to keep those feet moving and appropriate tempos, Shattered Youth is here to stay. Check them out here on Bandcamp.
Flyweight- This band didn’t reach my attention until a couple of months ago while scrolling through Instagram on a weekend evening. They didn’t catch my attention right away but the name stayed in mind and never left. It wasn’t until last month, is when I decided to tune in. I noticed they were on the flyer for the showcase and merch swap, I figured it was a subtle reminder. It was in that moment I decided to take the extra step to dig a little deeper to see what’s going on. I had to stimulate my curious nature.
I was somewhat surprised I enjoyed what I heard from their Bandcamp. Primarily, I’m not the biggest fan of the beatdown genre. More importantly, I have respect for its characteristics, influence and contribution to hardcore. I will admit, there are a solid handful of beatdown bands I have in rotation on my workout playlist. Flyweight has contains the skeleton and muscular system of beatdown, while offering a complementary groove to their sound. The third track on their Demo ‘26 release, Glass Jaw , is what really grabbed a hold of my ears. In addition, their release contains occasional elements of death metal, presenting itself at the right time. 5 songs deep and roughly 10 run time, their ep is good listen, a solid two thumbs up.
