No Cure's latest album, It Is Going To Get Dark

July 10th- The day one of Alabama’s finest, No Cure, released their latest album, It Is Going To Get Dark, across all streaming platforms, courtesy of Sharptone Records. The southeastern quintet are no strangers to dropping heat when it comes to their projects. Admittingly before pressing the play, I had a considerable amount of expectation. Prior to listening, I indulge in the habit of looking for how many songs there are and the length of time on the album. 12 songs and 33 minutes, that’s their longest project to date. In the same moment, my expectations raised. There was no shadow of doubt I wasn’t going to be disappointed.
Alongside corresponding music videos available on Youtube, the main thing grabbing my attention was the features presented on the track list. It gave me a boost of enthusiasm and curiosity to check out what I was going to listen to. It was awesome to hear each song had a level of mutual cohesiveness between each artist. More so, it portrayed a well done result of a collaboration. This first example that struck my attention was Brain Matter Displacement featuring Bayway NJ. While the song delivers a thunderous, aggressive sound, Jay swoops in and drops a nice 12 bars on us with a flow reminiscent of the golden era of hip hop. Ironclad is my favorite for the simple fact its features Inclination and its about their pledge and to the devotion to the lifestyle that shaped them to who they are today: straight-edge. Sharpen the Blade featuring Skyler from Varials/ Cell showcased a blend in cadence and heaviness from each individual band, meshed well together to create a menacing track. Purity Spiral is awesome because of the honorable influence in punishingly riffs and terrifying breakdown are inspired by the feature themselves, The Acacia Strain.

Sonically, this album is a perfect listen for core fans and fans of the related subgenres. The mixing and mastering on It Is Going To Get Dark is phenomenal. The sound coming from stereo speakers or noise cancelling headphones is complementary to its quality. The clarity behind each instrument is there and accounted for. No matter how loud it turned up the volume, the quality remained firm. In style and flavor, this album continues to raise the bar in the band’s progression. Stylistically, this project is good example of pushing the genre forward a bit. The prominence of death metal is full frontal, with the essential characteristics of beatdown splashed in there. Lastly, and by far the least, the mandatory second in command influence of evil hardcore lurking throughout the entirety this listening experience. Songs like Convulsing in the Dark and Oblivion Crusade are an indication that the band raised the stake of their level of griminess, creating a dark and intimidating vibe. I can’t continue to move forward without mentioning the stand out song in my opinion: Slowly turning blue. The tone and tempo maintained its flow throughout the course of the song. It was the lyrical perspective of witnessing addiction, the pain it causes on multiple ends and growing through the emotions ,watching the effects unfold. This was one of the songs I had to put in rotation. I Am Still Fucking Straight Edge is a hardcore two stepper banger that can not be ignored, maintaining the classic, less than a minute song structure, in- your- face message to let you know where they stand, with the X on their hand.
Overall, I’m pleased with It Is Going To Get Dark from head to toe. The occasional solo was present. Colossal sound within each breakdown. A considerable amount of dance parts. There is no lack anywhere, and no skips whatsoever.
