As I continue my journey in discovering international artists, I come across some hits and misses that is to be expected. No offensive to the hardworking creatives overseas that are putting in their effort to create, everything that enters the email isn’t able to grasp my full undivided attention. Good music nonetheless but not enough for me to write about all of the time. When I come across music that makes its way to fully occupy my auditory senses, the sense of excitement makes an appearance as I give my undivided attention. 19 year old South African singer, songwriter and producer Rhys Henry, better known as Rated R, is one of those artists that deserves not only my attention but in my opinion, worldwide attention. Let’s explore his debut mixtape ,Revelations.
Revelations was a long awaited body of work that made it’s way across international airwaves, ranging from his hometown to underground radio stations in the United States. With a range of influences including The Weeknd, Marilyn Manson, Micheal Jackson and Partynextdoor, Revelations exhibits Rated R’s diversity as he alternates between alternative R&B, Electro and Pop. His skill in combining these genre deserves praise as he presents his talent with ease.
Alongside his talent in satisfying his fans with great quality of music is the corresponding story that adorns the mixtape as a whole. View Revelations as journal entries as it exploits Rated R’s past relationships and events that compelled the artist to make certain decisions in life involving substance abuse used as coping mechanisms, transgressions of living the fast life, the pro and cons of the night life and the life saving influences of his current relationship. “I really express my feelings and my emotions in this tape. It’s a craft coming straight from my heart and soul”, Rated R says. The level of introspection is impressive as Rated R expresses that he gained tons of inspiration be simply taking the time to figure himself out and finding out who he truly is during the long months of the worldwide pandemic and dwelling in the quarantine. “I strive to be unique as I believe we are all different individuals and we all have a different story to tell” Rated R tell Bored.
Revelations is a mixtape that can turn a casual listener into a fan by the end of the project. From the infectious catchiness in the repetitious hooks, soothing, modern melodies and with the help of the features involved in the mixtape, I can almost guarantee his fan base will grow exponentially over time as he continues to create and maintain his brand of music.
