Cana! debut ep, Luvfield, out now!

Dallas synth-pop duo Cana! caught my attention with their single, R U in Luv? early November and every since then, I would bob my head to the nostalgic bop that brought me back to the schoolyard swing set. The electronic, upbeat tempo, reminiscent of early Depeche Mode and David Bowie, meshed together with the pop music vibes of early Madonna and the Latin flavor of the late singer Selena, Cana! had my full, undivided attention. Mid-Friday afternoon, the day brightened when the duo announced the release of their debut ep, Luvfield, available across multiple DSP’s

Luvfield is five songs deep and jam-packed with a blast from the past, late 80’s/ early 90’s influenced dream pop. The cover art with all credit given to photographer Katherine Tejada fits the overall aesthetic that offers a near-perfect representation of the vibe of the ep. Without listening to the ep, you can easily tell the direction that Luvfield is headed. Entering into the ep, the older millennial in me couldn’t help but to reminisce about the older, vibrant generation of the 1990s with Jansport backpacks, beanie babies, Nickelodeon’s All That, overalls, and YO MTV Raps. From start to finish, Luvfield is amazing. The quality of mixing and engineering, especially for an ep that contains 85%- 90% electronic/synth patterns is quite impressive. The track, That’s it, stood out to me out of the entire ep, but not by much. Although the overall theme and sound run together to make a complete project, That’s it is the height of the project, it is the most upbeat song of the project. That may be strategically placed in the middle of the ep but I could be totally wrong. Speaking of strategically placed, as I pay attention to the lyrical content and the song placement throughout this ep (I try to use common sense to overshadow the fact that I have poor knowledge in Spanish translation) I find it equivalent to young adult diary entries of having a true friend and the trials and tribulations of puppy love. Altogether, Luvfield is a fun-filled, 90’s freestyle, dream, synth-pop fused with Latin hip-hop flavor that will make you want to put on some roller skates and roll around the block with a Walkman cd player, black wired headphones, and cuffed up light blue Levi jeans.
