New Music 10/16

This year is moving a bit faster than I expected. The autumn season is in full effect, and it is time to dust off the hoodies and jackets. This year has also been the year for a slew of new bands and artists to reach the level of attention they deserve. Without further ado, here is some new music my ears have been glued to.

Turfburner- BMK

Turfburner is a young metalcore band out of DFW who has been on my radar for a little under a few weeks. Along with a couple of folks telling me about the band, they reached my awareness from the Earth Wrought album release show at The Post in Fort Worth back. Early in the month of August, Turfburner released BMK (Bad Media Karma) on multiple streaming platforms. Much like their ep what was released earlier this year, BMK offers a chaotic sound heavily influenced by the early 2000’s nu- metal. The stark difference in comparison is the captivating modern metalcore elements, standing apart from the essence of its primary influence, a wild, rhythmic ride to say the least. I appreciate the song structure of this track, it leaves no room for error and in a way, it emits a strong sense of musicianship in such a young band. The semi gutteral/ screeching vocals alongside poetic lyricism seemingly portraying their disgust and agitation of modern media, BMK is a hit for Turfburner. Cold Case - Code to the Streets

As soon as Cold Case entered into the DFW airwaves, they hit the ground running with an impressive work ethic. Their latest ep Force Fed, available on multiple streaming platforms, brings forth the finest elements of metallic/ heavy hardcore without reaching the realm of metalcore, ultimately showcasing the true blue, straight forward hardcore crossover for the tough guys and moshers alike. A couple of days ago, the Fort Worth hc band released a two- piece Church’s Chicken special, Code to the Streets, available on Bandcamp. Pushback is the first track to come out swinging. What initially grabbed my attention was the crispy, clean quality in the music, it resembles a polished finish on this body of art. With resemblance of mid to late 2000’s mosh, this track comes equipped with enough riffage to execute the proper two step and spinkicks on any dance floor. To my surprise, the guest vocals in the track was none other than Andy Zarate from the DFW band Soledad. The next and final track in the ep New Flesh. The original New Flesh track featuring Mikey Oliver was already a banger in itself, so when I saw another version of the track, I didn’t know what to expect. This version seems like an updated, remixed B side that maintained the nice breakdown at the end. To give the project a listen, tap the image below

Big X tha Plug featuring Sauce Walka- I Know

For the past three months, I have indulged in the tunes from upcoming Dallas rapper Big X Tha Plug. In my opinion, Big X Tha Plug is the rap’s total southern package, undeniably catchy flow, sheer authenticity, southern swag, with the smooth voice and delivery to match. After watching the video for Big Stepper on Youtube, I was instantly hooked. It’s difficult to ignore the cadence he possesses, it’s a flawless art that cannot be replicated without being accused stealing the sauce. The tone of his voice demands respect while keeping it smooth and concise in the same note. In his latest single I Know, Big X continues to rap like it’s a hobby over a nice southern thumper with class and finesse. This track comes equipped with a feature from the fellow Texan Sauce Walka, who undoubtedly brings a different yet cohesive energy to the track, thus completing the tune in the true Lone Star fashion.
