The Crown Takeover

DFW’s favorite hip-hop group, ( if they aren’t your favorite, they will be soon) The Crown, has released their debut self entitled album all across multiple DSP’s. I made the decision to wait until this morning to write a review, I wanted to give myself time to listen to the album multiple times and let the tunes marinate and enjoy good quality music without the obligation to jump on line and start typing away. As I’m writing this article though, I want to steer away from writing a review, for the reason that at this point I rather break down my theory as to why I believe The Crown is making a name for their selves in a short period of time.
In a previous article I asked a question that has been living rent free in my thought process for a quite sometime this year; Is The Crown taking over DFW?. There wasn’t much contemplation that followed, only a massive amount of page views and the resounding yes response. The answer was crystal clear with evidence to back it; it’s a no brainer that The Crown is taking over much of the metroplex as we speak. Sound, location, creative diversity, work ethic, unity, etc, all play a huge factor in the group. Even if one totally disagrees with the previous statements mentioned in this article, one can not deny the level of seriousness portrayed in the group’s primary image: ski masks, suit and tie and black slacks nestled in front of a vibrant red background. One of the first few thoughts I had upon viewing the imagery was, “ These guys look like the Reservoir Dogs on Dallas Hip Hop.” To a new listener, it can be perceived that the group means business and they didn’t come to play, as if they were created to do one thing and one thing only: Take over.
Although I am an avid listener and a fan of The Crown, I am writing from the perspective of an individual who notices a lot of what is going on, an individual who takes time out of his day to keep his eyes peeled and ears open to what is going on in the Dallas- Ft- Worth hip-hop environment.
The summarized basic structure of The Crown Takeover
Sound
As I expressed to the DJ and founder of The Crown, Marlon Jones, The Crown has a sound that is fully capable of reaching a wider, more broad audience as a collective. Also, the group doesn’t stick to one particular sound. Take a listen through their discography so far you can find many different elements of music including hip- hop and rap, remixes to older popular song, a little bit of indie/rock, r&b instrumentals and more, i.e Redux 1 and 3, Omelette Du Fromage.
Location
Briefly, I would like to touch on the fact that member of The Crown are truly spread out through the metroplex with members residing in Denton, Lewisville/ Flower Mound, Ft Worth, East Dallas/Mesquite. That may not mean much to some but when I say “ taking over DFW”, in the geographical sense, you can see where my angle is coming from.
Creative Diversity
NO ONE IN THE CROWN SOUNDS THE SAME…seriously. Name one song that The Crown has released where you confused two members to sound as one…if you do, you’re probably a habitual liar and I’m telling your mother. From Kawasaki’s technical flow to BlxckMale’s southern sound to Donovan’s cadence to Christian aka Lil PPboi’s east coast influence, that creates a conglomerate of creative elements that makes up for the group’s diversity that is able to reach the wider, more broad audience that was previously mentioned.
Work Ethic
If you have paid any attention, The Crown was virtually conceived right before the pandemic, literally. With the COVID-19 scare that has been among us plus maintaining job security in questionable work environments, members of The Crown released music as a collective & have also found the time beyond that for create their own releases. I am not discrediting any other artists in the DFW scene, I have written about many other DFW music releases and each release I have put my ears to has been wonderful to say the least, this is simply not their article to shine.
Unity
Aside from their primary imagery that was enough for me to conclude that they are forced to be reckoned with, The Crown is somewhat militant in how they move as a unit. Everything that they do, beside the recording, is in house. The Crown comes equipped with their own producer, their own DJ , their own artist and their own creative ideas, no outside links. They are truly all that they have and they work diligently among each other.
