Indonesian black metal band, Choria, releases a single from forthcoming album

In my lifetime, I haven’t given my ear to enough black metal to form a statement that will properly represent my opinion. Therefore coming into this review, I have prior knowledge of only a few black metal bands. What I have gathered from the little knowledge I acquired over the years is this metal subgenre has a “ Nazi problem”, originating sometime in the ’90s. These days, I found myself dipping my toes back into black metal to check out the current climate. DeafHeaven’s Sunbather played a role as my indirect gateway back into the genre. For the six months, three days at a time, I would tap into Sunbather , listen to the entire album, and let the streaming service suggest related bands while continuing to stream music, without skipping a beat. A couple of weeks ago, I received the press release of the Indonesian black metal band, Choria, who released a single from their forthcoming album, dropping March 27th.

Choria has been on a three hiatus from their last album release, Black Secret Beyond Nature, in October 2018. After listening to the album, I discovered a plenitude of elements that make up their sound: the atmospheric undertone fills in the negative space, it caters to the omnipresent instrument harmonization. Dark, desolate, yet melodic, Choria’s ability to perform with proper execution & exceptional sound quality is the product of satisfying black metal. As an avid fan, let me not forget the sheer technicality of the guitar solos and mesmerizing double bass. It reminds their fans of the foundation of the genre as the solos undergo a shredding rampage. The feeling that you get from the rhythmic thuds of the double bass stampedes on your chest and it doesn’t come in with an overabundance. Their latest single, Maria’s Tale I: Thorn Queen, is one of seven tracks recorded for December 2020 to February 2021 and will be included in their forthcoming album, A Dismal Repertoire, released by Interlude Records on March 27, 2021. Another element that grasped my interest is the title of the single, Maria’s Tale I: Thorn Queen: a part of an intriguing story of Maria van de Velde, a woman who dies in awaiting a loved one. The story pounds at the door that contains my curiosity as I squeeze my patience just a little tighter for March 27.
