Bent Blue “Between Your and You’re “ ep Review

It’s refreshing to hear contemporary hardcore bands bring back the original punk rock influence and the spirit attached to it, as opposed to the very metallic, death metal influenced hardcore we all jam out to. Don’t get me wrong, I love massive breakdowns and chugtastic riffage but I need to step back at times and get back to old school flavor. When I was introduced to Southern California’s Bent Blue, I felt the familiar feeling of when I was first introduced to Minor Threat: loud, fast and with vocals that sounds like it hurts. That’s just the way I like it.
Bent Blue’s “Between Your and You’re” is only available on Bandcamp and needless to say… it’s hard. Diving head first into the ep, I was greeted with a melodic riff that’s reminiscent to Lifetime or even Have Heart. There are many older and newer influences that formed the overall sound of Bent Blue but it’s safe to say that punk plays a major role. The energy involved in this body of work is intense as the band plays fast through songs like Rungless Ladder. From a lyrically standpoint, I’m impressed at the relevance of the content; it maintains the traditional hardcore spirit as its exploits modern social and political issues. “Between Your and You’re” is definitely a fun project to jam to. Other influences include Zero Boys, Articles of Faith, Gorilla Biscuits, Fiddlehead, etc. All in all, for a present day hardcore punk band, Bent Blue did their thing on this demo. It’s a two thumbs up from Bored!!
