Spike Chester’s Milk N Honey Review

Shortly after releasing the Coach Tev write up, I found myself listening going to his Spotify to listen to his album. After scrolling down and reaching the “Fans also like” section, I scrolled over to Spike Chester and immediately thought about the day I found out his album dropped in February. A short minute and an Instagram follow later, I dove right into the Milk N Honey album on Spotify.

The project is a colorful body of work that contains 9 songs and only takes up 23 minutes. Usually I gravitate towards shorter project due to my short attention span but this is an ep that I wish lasted longer. I was seduced by the amount of soul and creativity that Milk N Honey possesses, its pleasure to the ears during a Saturday afternoon ganja session. Spike has a wonderful, slower flow that glides over the instrumental and every so often he uses his natural talent to switch the flow from southern style bars to wholesome, catchy hooks that proves to be digestible, courtesy of his youthful yet masculine voice. This project brings in multifarious elements from other genres including pop, neo soul and r&b that ultimately labels this as progressive hip hop. In a way, it presents characteristics from the Golden Age of Hip Hop; the various elements neatly place in the instrumentals help accentuate Spike’s flows as he spits bars. Personally, I enjoy listening to Milk N Honey in its entirety, I don’t have any favorite songs but I’ve also didn’t skip a song either. This is perfect background music for a small kickback with a few friends with food, alcohol and some herb.
