DFW’s Funniest Hip- Hop Artist Christian Win

As I’m in the process of writing this article, I was thinking of a great way to start this off. Immediately, I was interrupted the thought of the last time I was with Christian. I busted out laughing with “Ephesians 6:17, DON’T EAT THE BOOTY” floating in my head. Let me explain the origins of that pseudo bible verse; Christian had an idea for a visual with his alter ego Old Man Musty and needed my help to achieve the goal. After he picked me up from my house, we cruised over to Walmart to purchase some items to complete his costume. He wore a pink polo with a blue sweater over it AND you already know he had the collar out, pink shorts, navy blue and pink argyle socks, grey hair wig and a fake grey mustache. We headed to the square in Denton to meet up with Marlon Jones. During the time, I was filming everything that  was going on, from the random conversations, Old Man Musty on the phone, etc. At one point, a flux of Christians swarmed us with religious pamphlets and questioned our beliefs. One woman in particular approached us with the question “Where do you think you will end up if you die tomorrow?”. Suddenly, as one of the Christian believers was preaching using a PA system, a man walked into the preacher’s personal space and proceeded to yell at him. The man was upset because what the preacher was talking about was interrupting a  conversation he was engaging in with someone else. As the trouble ensued, Old Man Musty stepped in, not to cool the situation down but to comically antagonize it. During the altercation, Old Man Musty stood there scratching his groin area and ends the situation with “Ephesians 6:17, DON’T EAT THE BOOTY!”

In my personal opinion, Christian is by far one of the most effortlessly funniest guys in the DFW hip hop scene. Every chance I get to spend with him is what I consider a comedy show, never a dull moment. He’s built like he’s ready to compete in the world strongest man competition but he’s short like a urban version of Napoleon. Granted he gets the perfect amount exercise. He mentioned to me that he really plans on getting his cardio toned for so he can perform to the best of his abilities without getting winded.

Prior to the “Ephesians 6:17” incident, I met up with the New York born, Texas raised artist in Bishop Arts at the Cafe Brazil. We immediately get into a debate on who possessed the most aggression; Dmx or Mystical. I had to forfeit due to my lack of knowledge of DMX and I didn’t want to get embarrassed. He introduces me to the fact that DMX in his prime was making “Jay-Z “ money while smoking crack. “It’s hard to maintain your finances while smoking crack” Christian chuckles.

“I was raised around real Bronx niggas.”

Christian, along with his mother and father, moved to Texas at the age of ten, because his father landed a good job. Shortly after, his two aunts and grandma moved down to the Lone Star State, for reasons unknown. They land in the far north Dallas area, Plano/ Allen area. The only child to an African American father and a Puerto Rican mother, music was always circulating in his household. From his earliest memories, artists like Lauren Hill, Jay Z , Busta Rhymes,    Al Green, Marvin Gaye and his biggest inspiration Missy Elliot. He attended The Colony High School for a short period of time before attending Prince of Peace Catholic School in Plano. “There was no impressing these kids, they all went same school for 10 years” he says. Being the one out of two blacks that attend that school, he ended up making a lot of friends.

“It was a lot of ‘Curb your enthusiasm’ type racism going on, like ‘they never been around  black people’ I type racism.”

He ended up being the prom king and graduated with a class of 50.

At the age of 16, he started rapping but didn’t actually start recording until 19 years old. At first he didn’t have the courage to sit in front of a mic and record. By the time he reached 19, he recorded a song and presented to his friend Theo. Afterwards, he formed a rap group called Index back home in New York. He claims that they were trash but as he reflects on the past, it’s safe to say that they simply didn’t know what to do. When Christian came back to Texas, he dove head first into making beats.

In 2012, he had a problem with drugs but eventually got clean. He attended a program which gave him the opportunity to talk teenagers that were struggling with drugs, similar to his experience. He met with the talented Currens Illum Manson (May he Rest In Peace) whose real name was Noah. Christian sent Noah a beat he produced that  Noah’s brother Eli ended up using. He credits Noah for pushing him back into making music. In 2015, Christian started recording again and by 2016 he was performing shows. In the midst of coming back to making music, he developed an unofficial team consisting of Noah, Christian’s friend and engineer Tommy.

Mr. Win is no stranger to making random videos out of boredom. He had a job working at a  super market gas station. If you know anything about those type of gas stations, they are basically cubicles. He started making videos and posting them on Snapchat. This created an audience and more and more people started to tune in.

My curiosity meter was going off the longer the conversation went on. I had to know the origins of his Twitter handle lil_p_p_boi. The name derived from one of his strangely labeled group chats, Lil Pee Pee Squad. Eventually it was taken to the next level, members of the group chat would greet each other in public by yelling “ LIL PEE PEE BOY!” Christian took it to social media and change his Twitter handle. At one point he attempted to change it to something else. Upon doing so, he received messages from friends in his direct message box asking him why did he change it. Ultimately he made the decision to keep it and it stuck every since. He fears that one day he will be with his mom in a public environment and someone who knows him by his Twitter handle and shout out LIL PEE PEE BOY!

“I can’t stop eating premium beef jerky in the clear, translucent bag, it’s crack.”

Recently he released his three song ep titled Dummy. He makes it clear that the ep has nothing to do with the album he is currently on. Since the album is far from complete with features up in the air and not yet   confirmed, I will speak on it when it’s finished. The ep is a creative body of work. The first song starts off with “ the hardest bar “ he ever wrote on a MF Doom instrumental. 505 is a Arctic Monkeys cover that Christian produced ( he had to learn the keyboard in order to create the instrumental). He credits Alex Turner as one of his favorite song writers. Bad Decisions, produced by INADZE, sounds like a club banger I would probably hear if I were partying in Oak Lawn area or on the 102.1 radio station. Click image below to check out his ep!!!
