Murk’s "FatBoy" album Review

It’s been a while since Corpus Christi’s recording artist Murk released an album; No Religion was released in the later part of 2017. Full of lyrical hip hop bangers including one of my favorite tracks, “Lostboy”, I thought it would be difficult to surpass the album. That wasn’t until I listened to his latest album, Fatboy, released in early April.

Murk’s experimentation is what kept my ears afloat during listening to the 9 song/ 20 minute project. It presents a shift in his music, sonically, and it proves to his fans that’s he’s not afraid to switch it up. That’s a healthy move for a growing artist; it helps broaden horizons and his fan base alike. The track, “Chills” was a true standout; melodic/ ethereal hip hop instrumental about his vulnerable state with a woman. Very catchy hook that grasped my attention enough to currently have this on my new Music playlist on Spotify. The track “Whatsup” is another melodic/ catchy hook singalong track that’s outside of his predictable approach. “Backroom” is a banger; a singalong bop that can get your body moving with a good amount of potential to hit radio play if it fell into the right hands.

Although Murk offers a handful tracks that aren’t on his usual menu, he still stays true to his original style that doesn’t let go of his die hard fan base. “Setik Interlude” was a breath of fresh, natural air as Murk spits the most stylistic flow over a contemporary hip hop beat that sent me back to mid 90’s NYC hip hop. “Fatboy” is the first song that plays as soon as you enter into the project. The Spanish guitar intro comes in strategically as Murk fires off a flawlessly vocal track of bars spews some crucial heat.

Overall I give the project a 10/10. It’s very stylish and it possible that this sets a new tone and new direction for Murk. It’s only up from here. To check out the “Fatboy” album, press the button below
