New song alert: Kitty- Addiction

Going through the journey of life battling mental instabilities is extremely difficult for many of all different ages ranges. Unfortunately for some, it’s proven to be fatal. Modern western medicine can only do so much until it becomes insufficient, other forms of relief don’t always suffice. Not everyone makes it out on the other side. The strength to survive becomes weaker at times with just enough to make it to the next day. A considerable amount of teens and young adult venture out to seek ways to alter their current mental faculty and/ or change the perception of their harsh reality. Alcohol and drug abuse has a way of seduction that takes over rational decision making, presumably making reality, or the lack thereof , easier to deal with.

Influenced by 90’s girl grunge/ alternative/ punk rock bands and inspired by the song “Violet” by Hole, the late 80’s/ early 90’s alt rock band featuring singer and guitarist Courtney Love, DFW model and artist Kitty released a new single, Addiction, that sheds light on her struggle with her mental health. The track features elements of post punk and goth rock with a modern indie undertone. If I could compare Kitty’s vocals on this track, I’d say imagine early mezzo soprano Joan Jett letting go of her angst to dig deep to reach her vulnerabilities and letting it all go. The lyrical content is nearly hypnotizing as the repetition and flow of the song seeps into the listening ear. “Bottom of the ocean is where I reside” is a line that brings attention to itself because subconsciously, you can feel the depth of her mental state.

I was able to share a conversation with Kitty about “Addiction”. She expressed to me that this song was written about the time she was driving home late night/ early morning from Forney, Texas, roughly 30 miles east of Dallas. During the drive home, she was inebriated and was driving past White Rock Lake, swerving in and out of the lane with a blurry mind. Prior to this, she was sober but that night she relapsed. Mentally, she was in a deep, dark place and the thought of driving her car to the bottom of the lake was enticing. Fortunately she came to her senses and lived to tell the tale. Metaphorically, the song translates to Kitty being present at the crossroads: the battle of thoughts between sobriety and suicide creating a great deal of confusion and caused her to question the existence of happiness. “Unspoken words left unsaid”, in Kitty’s words, translates to her finding solace in her in her mental state by wanting a friend to tell her that everything will be ok.
